Unique terroir
Our olive groves are located in Sitia, in the eastern part of the island of Crete, an area recognized by UNESCO as a World Geopark (Sitia Geopark) for the unique characteristics of its biodiversity.
Sitia is known for producing some of the best olive oils in the world. There are several reasons why the olive groves in Sitia are considered the best in the world:
The climate: Sitia has a unique microclimate, with mild winters and warm summers, which is ideal for the growth and cultivation of olives.
Traditional farming practices: Farmers in Sitia have been cultivating olives for centuries and have developed traditional farming practices that have been passed down from generation to generation.
Quality of olives: The olives grown in Sitia (Koroneiki variety) are of excellent quality, with a distinctive aroma, fruity taste and low acidity.
Organic farming: many of the olive groves in Sitia are cultivated with organic crops, which means that no chemical fertilizers or pesticides are used.
Protected Designation of Origin (PDO):Sitia olive oil has PDO status, which means that it is produced in a specific geographical area and has unique characteristics directly linked to the soil and climate of the region.
Overall, the combination of climate, traditional farming practices, olive quality, organic farming and PDO status all contribute to Sitia's olive groves being the best in the world.
